on eating crabs

One of my favorite things about the summer is eating crabs. It's true, I love blue crab. Those disgusting bottom-feeder shellfish are delish, in my opinion. I enjoy recipes with crab in them like crab dip and crabcakes, very much. That said, my very most favorite way to eat crab is simply the fresh meat with tons of Old Bay and malt vinegar over a table covered by newspaper.

In Maryland it is not weird to love to eat crabs in this way- it is also not weird to think this is very disgusting. It is weird, however, that I can not trim the fat off chicken breast and I certainly cannot, will not, eat bird on the bone. Nothing sounds worse than a 'wing' to me. But give me a whole crab and I will mindlessly rip off the legs, disembowel it and sift through the lungs (devil fingers) and clean off the green gland (mustard) to get to the delicious backfin meat. What kind of barbarian am I? Gross. When in Rome... I guess...

Shocking as it may be, I will sit for hours picking crab, socializing and taking in the sweet summer sun. Especially when it means sitting on a deck overlooking the water. I love it.

It is one of those things that I was raised on. I didn't learn that making cookies from scratch meant mixing things like flour and eggs until I was 16- but I feel as though I have always known how to eat a crab. I am thankful for summer and for living on one big body of brackish water that houses those beautiful blue crab beauties.

those pictures are beautiful! They make me miss home. Maybe we can have a crab feast at miller manor and I will pick crab meat for you.

I enjoy crab myself...We do crab legs here in coastal GA. I am often reminded of how much my hubby loves me when he works so hard at getting the yummy meat of the crab out and then hands it over to me--just because he knows I love those perfect big pieces...aahhh true love. perhaps I should do it for him next time?

The first crab I ever had was at the staff party at camp. Needless to say, I got spoiled. :)

I also love crab meat, just not the "pickin" of THE crabs. Next time, I will sit next to you, paper covered table, mallets, old bay and vinegar etc.

I love me some of those.

Have you considered throwing in the crab pods (saw them in boat house) and catching your own? Jon and I used to do it all the time. Especially in August. It's fun and saves much $$$$$.
