Bunny Cake has been a long standing tradition in my family-- I remember spending almost every Easter "eve" in the past boiling eggs for dyeing and creating the Bunny Cake with my aunt, Carolyn. I have always known it was a tradition of my mom's, too, and Easter just doesn't feel the same without it.
The first Bunny Cake of our family was created by my mother and my Aunt Lois in 1972. Obviously, I was not a part of that first experience- since my mom was a senior in high school. I was so excited when Carolyn e-mailed me this picture yesterday. There are so many things I love about it.

I love that they are maybe, 18, in this photo.
I love that my mom is in this picture.
I love that for whatever reason, they randomly decided to make a cake, not knowing what a tradition they had started.
I love that they are standing in the house where I grew up.
I love that my aunt eventually painted over that faux wood paneling.
I love that the Bunny Cake looks so similar to what we still make today (although, to be honest, I think we have only improved as a family).
I love my Auntie Lo's hair (the brunette in the photo) so stylish!
I love that my Aunt Lois has balloons- balloons? And her coy look in this picture.
I love that I missed out on the blonde hair gene. Whatever...
When our little camp family decided to have a cook-out Easter dinner, I knew what my food contribution would be- a Bunny Cake, of course.
I hope your Easter was blessed. There is so much hope in the Resurrection. And so much sugar and fond memories in a Bunny Cake.

this reminds me of the sermon today. How excited you will be to see your mom at the celebration that is Heaven!
Also, cute cake- you're mom's cake is more like the 70's version :)
that is an awesome picture.. and i love the bunny cake! cutest tradition ever. :)
The tradition of the Bunny cake goes back to your grandma L. I remember her making them with me helping. I am so glad the tradition continues in our family. I know your mom is enjoying your efforts from the Easter celebration in heaven. How joyous. :)
oops... who knew it was and EVEN older tradition... thanks for setting me straight Carolyn :)
I love this! The picture is beautiful, too.
Tara..... MY MOM MADE THE SAME CAKE every year. My sister has started it with her kids and I would have this year if it wasn't Thea's birthday. I have looked forward to starting it with my kids for always.
Tara, we are kindred spirits you and me.
Although I do use a good amount of paper products and such. do you think we can overcome that?
I love you Tara...and your bunny cake. I'm sure your mom would have laughed and loved you for continuing the tradition she started.
I love your aunt Lois too.
